Can You Really Diagnose Alzheimer’s in One Day?

For many families, the uncertainty surrounding memory problems is one of the most distressing parts of the journey. Waiting weeks — or even months — for a diagnosis can feel unbearable when you’re worried that something more serious may be going on. But is it really possible to diagnose conditions like Alzheimer’s disease in a single day?

At the Memory and Brain Clinic London, the answer is yes — in many cases, it is. Here’s what you need to know.

Why Speed Matters

When a loved one is showing signs of memory loss, getting answers quickly is not just a matter of convenience — it’s about:

  • Understanding whether the symptoms are age-related or part of something more serious
  • Gaining access to the right treatment, support, and planning tools as early as possible
  • Reducing the emotional strain on families, who may be feeling lost or uncertain

Unfortunately, traditional referral pathways — even in the private sector — can involve multiple appointments across different days, long waits for brain scans, or delays in seeing the right specialist.

Introducing Our Signature One-Day Diagnostic Clarity Pathway

At the Memory and Brain Clinic, we’ve developed a streamlined Signature One-Day Diagnostic Clarity Pathway for patients with memory concerns. This means patients and families can walk away with a clear diagnosis — or strong reassurance — on the very same day.

Here’s what’s typically included in a one-day assessment:

  • A comprehensive cognitive consultation with Consultant Geriatrician Dr Soumit Singhai
  • Specialist memory testing using validated tools
  • Full review of relevant medical and neurological history
  • Same-day brain imaging (MRI), if clinically indicated
  • Immediate blood tests to rule out reversible causes
  • A clear explanation of findings and next steps, discussed before the end of your visit

Is It Always Definitive?

While a same-day diagnosis is often possible — particularly where there is a clear clinical picture — not all memory problems are immediately diagnosable.

In some cases, such as Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) or early, atypical symptoms, we may recommend additional investigations including:

  • FDG PET scans
  • Genetic risk testing (e.g. APOE status)
  • LucentAD® Alzheimer’s blood testing
  • Neuropsychological assessments

Even so, the Signature One-Day Pathway still provides a critical early evaluation, an expert opinion, and a personalised plan for what comes next.

Who Should Consider a One-Day Memory Assessment?

You may benefit if you or your loved one is experiencing:

  • Short-term memory loss
  • Repetition or word-finding difficulties
  • Disorientation or confusion
  • Behavioural or emotional changes
  • A family history of dementia and increasing worry
