Many people experience changes in memory, thinking speed, or concentration as they get older — but how do you know when it’s something more serious? Whether it’s forgetfulness, confusion, or difficulty focusing, getting answers begins with the right type of assessment.
In most cases, the Addenbrooke’s Cognitive Examination (ACE-III) — a widely used screening tool — is enough to assess memory and thinking problems in a clinic setting. It forms a central part of our consultant-led diagnostic process, along with brain scans and blood tests.
However, in some select cases, your specialist may recommend a more detailed evaluation known as a neuropsychological assessment, carried out by a Clinical Neuropsychologist.
The ACE-III (Addenbrooke’s Cognitive Examination – Version III) is a structured test used by specialists to assess five key cognitive domains:
It usually takes about 30 minutes and is highly effective at identifying common memory disorders such as Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer’s disease.
For most patients, the ACE-III provides sufficient diagnostic clarity when combined with a full clinical consultation, MRI brain scan, and routine blood tests — all of which are included in our One-Day Memory Diagnostic Pathway.
A neuropsychological (or neuropsychometric) assessment is a more detailed series of tests used to explore complex or borderline cases. This is typically recommended if:
This extended testing is carried out by a Clinical Neuropsychologist, typically over 2–3 hours, and produces a detailed report on your cognitive strengths and weaknesses.

At our private clinic, we provide a comprehensive, one-day memory and brain health evaluation, which includes:
For most people, this is all that’s needed to confidently diagnose or rule out conditions like Alzheimer’s disease, vascular cognitive impairment, or age-related memory loss. Where further input is required, we can arrange a referral for neuropsychological testing to build a more detailed picture.
We understand how stressful memory problems can be. That’s why we focus on:
You don’t need to navigate multiple NHS waiting lists or distant specialist centres — we provide specialist-level diagnostic clarity closer to home, with access to neuropsychology only if genuinely needed.
