Frequently Asked Questions

Clarity. Confidence. Compassionate Expertise.

At the Memory and Brain Clinic London, we understand that memory changes and cognitive symptoms can be unsettling. Whether you’re noticing subtle forgetfulness, worried about dementia, or feeling lost after an unclear diagnosis, we’re here to provide expert answers — with warmth, professionalism, and urgency.

Below, you’ll find answers to some of the most common questions we receive from individuals and families across Harley Street, Greater London, and the surrounding Home Counties, all looking for trusted private support for memory and brain health.

1. What conditions do you assess and treat?

We diagnose and manage a broad spectrum of cognitive and memory-related conditions, including:

  • Memory loss and forgetfulness
  • Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI)
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Vascular dementia
  • Lewy body and Parkinsonian dementias
  • Frontotemporal dementia (FTD)
  • Functional cognitive disorders
  • Post-COVID or post-illness cognitive concerns

We also support patients with complex or unexplained cognitive symptoms where previous assessments have been inconclusive.

2. What happens during a private memory assessment?

Your assessment is comprehensive, yet carefully structured to be respectful of your time. It includes:

  • A full neurological and medical consultation with Dr. Soumit Singhai, Consultant Geriatrician and Dementia Specialist
  • A detailed cognitive assessment with Dr. Makuloluwe, Consultant Geriatrician and expert in cognitive disorders
  • Cognitive blood panel testing
  • An MRI brain scan, where indicated

This allows us to understand the cause of your symptoms and offer a clear, evidence-based diagnosis.

3. Who will I be seen by?

Our patients are seen exclusively by senior consultants:

  • Dr. Soumit Singhai, with over 25 years of experience as a Consultant Geriatrician and specialist in dementia and complex memory conditions
  • Dr. Makuloluwe, a Consultant Geriatrician with advanced expertise in cognitive and neuropsychiatric assessment, who performs the cognitive testing

Together, they offer one of London’s most experienced private diagnostic teams in cognitive medicine.

4. How long does the full private memory assessment take?

The complete assessment pathway takes approximately 3.5 to 4 hours, usually delivered across two visits. This includes:

  • Consultation and neurological examination (Dr. Singhai) – ~60 minutes
  • Cognitive testing and evaluation (Dr. Makuloluwe) – ~45 to 60 minutes
  • Results and feedback session – ~60 minutes
  • Cognitive blood tests – ~15 to 20 minutes
  • MRI brain scan – ~30 to 45 minutes, performed at a specialist imaging centre nearby

This timeline ensures thorough, yet efficient diagnosis — with rapid access to your results and next steps.

5. Can a family member or carer attend with me?

Yes, absolutely. We actively encourage family involvement. Carers and loved ones often provide helpful background and can support you throughout the process. They are welcome to join all consultations.

6. What happens after the assessment?

Dr. Singhai will meet with you (and your family if you wish) to explain your results in plain, supportive language. You’ll receive:

  • A clear explanation of any diagnosis
  • A tailored care and management plan
  • Advice on treatment options, next steps, and support services

Whether the news is reassuring or confirms a diagnosis, we’re here to guide you with empathy and expertise.

7. Do I need a GP referral to book an appointment?

No. You do not need a GP referral. Many patients choose to self-refer for peace of mind or faster access to expert care. Our clinic is fully independent and offers appointments without delay.

8. Can I get a second opinion at your clinic?

Yes — and we regularly provide second opinions for cognitive and memory-related diagnoses.

In fact, we often:

  • Identify previously missed conditions
  • Correct inaccurate diagnoses made by other private clinics or NHS services
  • Help patients who’ve felt uncertain or misdiagnosed to finally get the clarity they deserve

If something about your current diagnosis doesn’t feel right, we’re here to re-evaluate with fresh eyes, specialist tools, and senior expertise.

9. How do I book a consultation?

Simply call us or use the secure contact form on our website to reach Dr. Singhais private secretary, who will assist you with appointment times and any questions about the process.

10. What should I bring to my appointment?
  • A list of current medications
  • Any relevant GP or specialist letters
  • MRI or CT scan reports (if available)
  • Any prior test results
  • Notes or observations from family or carers, if helpful

This ensures we can make the most of your appointment time and avoid repeating unnecessary investigations.

11. How is dementia diagnosed at your clinic?

We use a gold-standard, stepwise approach that includes:

  • Structured cognitive testing
  • Clinical evaluation of symptoms and history
  • Blood tests to check for treatable causes
  • High-resolution MRI brain imaging

We provide a clear written report, and where applicable, a confirmed diagnosis using internationally recognised criteria.

12. Can memory problems be treated?

Yes. Some conditions are fully reversible, while others can be slowed or stabilised with timely intervention. Even in progressive forms of dementia, early diagnosis offers:

  • Better planning
  • Treatment options to preserve quality of life
  • Support for both patient and family

We help you take action with clarity, not confusion.

13. Do you support family members and carers?

Yes. Carers are central to the journey. We offer:

  • Honest, compassionate advice for families
  • Educational support and care guidance
  • Clear signposting to community and private resources
  • Ongoing follow-up if desired

You’re never alone — our clinic is here to support you and those closest to you.

14. Do you see patients with private medical insurance?

Yes. We are recognised providers for Cigna and WPA, and we’re happy to see patients whose care is covered through these insurers.
If you’re unsure whether your policy covers private memory assessment or cognitive diagnostics, our administrative team can guide you through the process and provide any necessary documentation.

What our patients and colleagues say...

My partner has been seeing Dr Soumit Singhai for about 4 years now for his Alzheimer’s, and I honestly feel that he would have been much worse had we not sought out the help of Dr Singhai. My partner has been on medication prescribed for him by Dr Singhai, which has helped to slow down the progression of this horrid disease. Also the regular monitoring of the situation has enabled my partner to receive higher strength meds when needed, and have a better of quality of life. Dr Singhai is a very kind and caring man, and very supportive!
